The Village Buttery - Ruidoso, NM

If you are EVER in or near Ruidoso, New Mexico, you won't want to miss this great place!  The name gives away the yumminess, doesn't it?  Well, if you're a butter fan,  it does.  By the way, did you know that Ruidoso really is a village?  That's what the locals say!

This buttermilk pie is delicious!
The chocolate mousse was good, too.  It was too dark-chocolatey for me and my family, but I know some people that would be glad to have that type of dessert.
Here's a close-up!
The owner, Elliott Taylor, makes all of the bread except for the whole wheat variety. His croissants were so good!
Everything was good!
What was neat about the place was that the young guy that owned it seemed to really enjoy doing what he does. He caters, bakes, serves, greets, and gets to know his customers - even if they are only visiting. He was dressed in "Rickie Fowler" golf attire - just like a couple of our boys were! They had a 1:00 p.m. tee time, and Elliott and his waiter/friend had one scheduled for 3:00 p.m., so they saw them on the course.  Too bad they got rained out :(.

What I noticed about being in Ruidoso was that it was much like West Texas and SW Oklahoma - warm, friendly people who were excited to tell you about their town, but also interested in finding out about their visitors.

If you do happen to go that way, bring me back a piece of that buttermilk pie, okay?  I'll reimburse you! :)

Yum! Sands Restaurants, Raton, NM

Last week, as my family traveled to Colorado for vacation, we decided to try out different restaurants along the route.
We stopped in , New Mexico, and found this great place on the website TripAdvisor, called Sands Restaurant. It was delicious!!
I got this Monte' Cristo Sandwich, which had ham, turkey and Swiss cheese inside, then coated and fried until golden. The kids helped me eat it because it was huge! (Sorry some of the pictures are sideways. I uploaded them from my phone and don't know how to rotate them on the blog!)
The specialty at this restaurant was Mexican food. Whichever child got this said it was great!
Our daughter got this Italian chicken dish, which was also very good.
...and a roast-type of sandwich. Others got duplicate meals, so I'm not showing those pictures.

It was fun going to family-type places, instead of chain restaurants. I'll be showing more eating places for a few more posts.  It was a fun part of vacation!

I have a vacation post on my "Shine Like Stars" blog, if you're interested. It was great to get away!

Babe's - Yum!

While my husband and three boys enjoyed a weekend in Amarillo, TX, playing golf (and my husband preached for a small congregation, too), my daughter and I headed to Arlington, TX, for a girls' getaway.  Our GPS lady, we fondly named "Betsy", wasn't cooperating in the Dallas metroplex, we managed to find where we were wanting to go ourselves, for the most part.
On the way to worship Sunday morning, we spotted a "Babe's" restaurant (www.babeschicken.com) in downtown Arlington.  Not sure why this cool bus was parked out front, but I snapped a picture of it because of its uniqueness.
This show marquee was right by Babe's.  If you're visiting Arlington, this might be something fun to check out!
We'd heard of Babe's, famous for their chicken and in many different locations around Dallas.  So, later on that afternoon we decided to go try it out ourselves.
WOW!  We were impressed!
Great food and huge portions! Fun atmosphere, too!  (You might want to learn the words to "The Hokey Pokey"!)
This is just my filled plate.  The actual food comes out on platters and in bowls.  You pass it around your table, family style. (Mom has a recipe on here for Creamed Corn that she says is similar to the corn at Babe's!)
We quickly realized why people kept walking out with little "doggy bags" of chicken and/or biscuits!  We soon knew why and carried our own baggies out!

I can't wait to introduce my husband and three boys to Babe's.  I did notice that some of the restaurants have fewer meat selections.  The one in Arlington has six different meats to choose from.  We had the regular fried chicken and the chicken tenders.  Wonderful and worth a trip to Arlington!
